Qantas flight cancelled as 'fumes fill cabin'

PASSENGERS were forced off a Qantas flight this morning after fumes filled the cabin, according to one of the 220 people on board the flight out of Melbourne.

The airline has been forced to cancel three other flights which the Boeing 767 aircraft was to make later today.

This morning's incident abaoard QF418 is the second in 24 hours affecting Qantas aircraft flying out of Melbourne. Passengers booked on a flight to London were stranded overnight in the Victorian capital after the discovery of damage to the plane's wing.

"The QF418 between Melbourne and Sydney has been cancelled after fumes were detected on engine start-up," the spokesman said.

"The (Boeing) 767 aircraft has been taken out of service while engineers identify and resolve the issue."

According to the husband of one of the people on board, the fumes filled the aircraft's cabin before passengers disembarked.

"The passengers were on the plane on the tarmac when the issue occurred and have had to be moved to a different aircraft," the husband said.

Three other flights that the plane was scheduled to make today - QF444, QF427 and QF449 - have also been cancelled as a result, the spokesman said.

He said passengers will be placed on other services.
