A federal judge in Arizona has blocked key parts of the state's strict immigration law a day before it was due to take effect.
Arizona Judge Susan Bolton blocked the requirement that police check a person's immigration status and the requirement for immigrants to carry their papers at all times.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer says the restrictions could be temporary while the court resolves the issues.
"This is an injunction, they haven't heard the merits of the bill. This is just an injunction, a temporary injunction," Ms Brewer said.
Opponents of the law have argued it will lead to racial profiling and that it is the responsibility of the federal government, not the states, to enforce immigration laws.
