As British and American troops continue to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, charities on both sides of the Atlantic are working to support them.

If you would like to help, the following charities are worth your consideration.

In the United Kingdom:

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association is one of the best-known charities in the UK. SSAFA supports ex-military and the serving soldier, while caring for the needs of families and dependants. There are a variety of ways to contribute to SSAFA’s work, and you can learn more through its web site.

SOS Support our Soldiers is a registered charity whose web site has information on donating money and sending care packages to serving troops, as well as other ways to support the military.

The Royal British Legion, founded in 1921, is famous for its annual Poppy Appeal. The Legion also supports veterans and active-duty members of the armed forces, as well as their dependants, throughout the year.

In the United States:

United Services Organizations—better known as the USO— is a non-profit that serves as a bridge between the American people and American armed forces. To donate, volunteer, or help in other ways, check out the USO’s web site.

America Supports You is a Department of Defense web site linking to hundreds of groups supporting the troops, veterans, and military families, and offering a wide variety of ways to get involved.

Any Soldier was started in 2003 by a soldier serving in Iraq and his parents, both veterans. Since then, they have helped tens of thousands of soldiers receive care packages from back home.
