Steelmaker Corus is cutting jobs at UK plants including at Scunthorpe and on Teesside, unions say.
The company has refused to confirm the job losses, but the cuts were described by unions as "devastating".
There are reports that about 500 jobs will go at Scunthorpe while more than 400 are at risk on Teesside. Corus in Rotherham is also reportedly affected.
The subsidiary of India's Tata Steel, has seen a substantial fall in demand as the global recession hits industry.
In January, Corus said that it was cutting 3,500 jobs worldwide, including about 2,500 in the UK.
Corus says that it is Europe's second largest steel producer with annual revenues of around £12bn and crude steel production of over 20 million tonnes, primarily in the UK and the Netherlands.
