An attack on a birthday party in the northern Mexican city of Torreon has left 17 people dead.

Seventeen people were killed and 10 injured in an attack on a party in Torreon. A group of men armed with automatic rifles stormed the party early Sunday morning at a party hall called the Quinta Italia Inn and opened fire on the guests. The injured were transported to various hospitals in the region. The victims, aged between 20 and 38, included the man who was celebrating his birthday.
Torreon is located in northern state of Coahuila, which like other border states, has seen a high level of drug cartel-related violence.
